Violence and Bullying Prevention
In recent years, the number of cases of bullying and violence in the workplace has risen significantly. The large number of people affected is a significant (economic) factor that should not be underestimated. After all, both phenomena, bullying and violence, lead to a reduction in work performance. This can often be prevented with the right preventative measures.
What do violence and bullying mean in the world of work?
Anyone who wants to or has to deal with violence and bullying in companies should first familiarize themselves with both terms. The two terms are often used interchangeably. This may not come as a surprise, as both violence and bullying create a poor working atmosphere. However, the meanings of the two phenomena are completely different.
Violence
The term "violence" is multifaceted. Generally speaking, we can always speak of violence in the workplace when an act is an unacceptable form of behavior, practice or threat. It is irrelevant what form this takes. Although violence is traditionally associated with physical harm, other forms of harm to those affected are also conceivable. Violent acts can also be aimed at psychological, sexual or economic harm. A distinction must be made between external and internal violence. While external violence is perpetrated by customers, internal violence comes from colleagues or superiors.
Bullying
Bullying is a particular form of internal violence in the workplace. Typically, bullying is carried out by colleagues or superiors. In rare cases, however, bullying can also occur externally, for example through interfaces. In all cases, bullying is an extremely stressful situation for those affected. However, the inflationary use of the term "bullying" leads to an unclear distinction. Bullying is defined as conflictual communication in the workplace in which at least one person is systematically, frequently and repeatedly attacked directly or indirectly.
What are the causes of bullying and violence in the workplace?
The possible causes are as varied as their manifestations. In most cases, however, a high workload leads to an accumulation of cases of bullying or violence in the workplace. Other causes can be, for example, non-transparent decisions or inadequate management behavior. Often, however, there are also longer, unresolved conflicts.
What are the consequences of bullying and violence in the workplace?
The consequences of violence and bullying are fatal, especially for those affected. Apart from that, the company in question also suffers from the effects of both phenomena. The working atmosphere can deteriorate considerably, which can lead to significant staff turnover. In times of a shortage of skilled workers, this is a consequence that every company would probably like to avoid. As the performance of those affected often suffers, the error rate in the work process increases and the productivity of the company deteriorates. A lack of mental and physical well-being can also drastically increase absenteeism.
How can prevention help?
As the examples show, both bullying and violence in the workplace can have considerable (economic) consequences for the company. However, these unpleasant effects are sometimes avoidable. With the right prevention, many conflicts can be dealt with before they escalate. Prevention can also help to identify and eliminate potential causes early enough. Prevention courses are also available to deal with bullying and violence in the workplace. However, there is no "panacea" for any company or conflict. Every case of workplace bullying or violence deserves and requires individual attention.
