Construction site safety & SiGeKo
The SiGeKo (Safety and Health Protection Coordinator) assumes responsibilities according to § 3 of the Construction Site Ordinance (BaustellV) during the planning and execution of construction projects. The SiGeKo is required to determine, coordinate, and verify the implementation of necessary occupational safety and health protection measures.
Tasks of the SiGeKo include, among others:
- Creating the Safety and Health Protection Plan (SiGePlan) to eliminate hazards in collaborations involving multiple employers.
- Providing documentation for future work on the structural facility.
- Compiling the Construction Site Ordinance and the construction site notice.
- Advising the site manager and the external contractor coordinator on occupational safety.
Who qualifies as a SiGeKo?
Depending on the nature and complexity of the construction project, architects, engineers, technicians, and supervisors may be considered suitable.
When is a SiGePlan required?
If a construction site involves employees from multiple employers or if particularly hazardous work is being carried out, a Safety and Health Protection Plan (SiGePlan) must be created before the construction site is set up. The plan must identify the occupational safety regulations applicable to the specific construction site and include special measures for particularly hazardous work. If significant changes occur during the execution of the construction project, the coordinator must adjust or have the Safety and Health Protection Plan adjusted.
